The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) will establish a committee in January to look into the party’s performance in the just ended presidential and parliamentary elections, the party’s chairman, Stephen Ayensu Ntim has announced.
According to Chairman Ntim, the committee will achieve this by engaging party faithful and the public in order to give it a comprehensive insight into why it performed woefully in such a high-stakes election.
The NPP suffered a landslide loss in the presidential election after its flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia garnered about 1.6 million votes less than his political rival, now president-elect, John Dramani Mahama.
In the parliamentary elections results declared so far, the NPP has obtained less than 90 seats in a 276-seat legislature, suffering losses in areas it has long held since the inception of the 4th Republic.
Speaking to journalists at a press conference in Accra, Mr. Ntim said the party intended to understand the reasons for which it came up short.
“As a party that was formed by individuals from all sectors of our society who are motivated by the ideals of development and freedom, we seek to grow the individual liberties of our people by growing a strong democracy.
“The party would in the month of January 2025, set up an effective and objective election review committee to undertake a post-mortem into the outcome of the election. The committee will engage all party stakeholders and the general public on the factors and circumstances leading to our defeat,” he said.
He stated that the findings of the committee would “enable our people to express their concerns” leading to reforms and changes crucial in restructuring the party as it returns to opposition after eight years in government.
