The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has expressed strong reservations about the current leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC), describing the institution as lacking principles and coherence.
His remarks come in response to recent criticisms by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who labeled the EC leadership as “not fit for purpose” and called for a reset of the commission.
Speaking on JoyNews PM Express with host Evans Mensah monitored by Kumasimail, Kodua Frimpong was asked whether he agreed with Asiedu Nketia’s assertion that the EC is incompetent and requires a leadership overhaul.
The NPP General Secretary responded candidly, stating,“Based on what is happening currently, I’m unable to even speak positively of the Electoral Commission. The inconsistency in their actions makes it difficult for me to understand their decisions or even criticize someone’s perception of the EC.”
When pressed further on whether he agreed with Asiedu Nketia’s assessment, Kodua clarified, “That’s exactly the point I’m making. I’m unable to side with them or defend them because if you cannot be consistent or coherent in your decisions, it becomes difficult for people to predict or respect you. The Electoral Commission must have principles.”
The host challenged Kodua Frimpong on whether he believed the EC Chairperson and the two deputies should be removed, as suggested by the NDC. Kodua was measured but firm in his response.
“From where I stand, I’m unable to comment definitively on the Electoral Commission. Their inconsistency leaves me unable to defend them or take a clear position on their leadership.”
Pressed again on whether he would defend the EC leadership if a process to remove them were initiated.
Kodua stated emphatically, “Why should I? On what basis? That’s why I said, you must have principle and conviction. For people to respect you for that, even if they disagree with you.”
