Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced that Ghana’s Parliament will soon begin drafting legislation to enable lifestyle audits targeting individuals suspected of accumulating unexplained wealth.
This move is aimed at strengthening the country’s anti-corruption framework.
Speaking at the parliamentary event captioned “Parliament to Institutionalize National Integrity Awards to Boost Anti-Corruption Drive” on Monday, Speaker Bagbin said the forthcoming bill will empower state institutions to investigate the lifestyles of public officials, politically exposed persons, and private individuals whose living standards do not match their declared sources of income.
He emphasized that the legislation will help curb impunity by holding accountable those flaunting ill-gotten wealth in plain sight of ordinary Ghanaians.
He said “I am to this end, receiving a lot of input to process legislation in lifestyle audits.”
The Speaker highlighted that the initiative has received strong backing from high-ranking government officials and civil society representatives, including Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who has recently voiced her endorsement of these reforms.
He stressed “No wonder that, it is becoming pronounce in speeches of senior members, civil society, in government and just is it yesterday or two days ago our own vice president Prof Naana Opoku Agyeman made mention of it we will legislate in this matter.”
He also expressed that it was encouraging to hear the Office of the Special Prosecutor emphasize this in their recent statement, stressing that the bill will be passed.
“And I was happy to hear OSP also include it in his statement, we will legislate and we will stop this impunity of people flaunting ill gotten wealth in the face of pure Ghanaians.”
