Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead by police following a robbery attack on a mobile money vendor at Tema Community 5, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed.
The incident occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026, at about 8:30 a.m., when the suspects reportedly attacked the vendor at Aba Fosuah Plaza under the guise of a mobile money transaction.
According to a statement from the Tema Regional Police Command, one of the suspects, who was riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, approached the victim pretending to make a cash withdrawal. However, he pulled a pistol and demanded the victim’s bag containing cash.
The victim resisted, leading to a struggle involving both suspects. During the altercation, the pillion rider shot the vendor in the leg before they seized the bag and fled the scene on a motorbike.
Police said a patrol team from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, which was on duty nearby, responded swiftly to a distress call and pursued the suspects.
The suspects, riding a black Royal motorbike with registration number M24-GE 778, reportedly opened fire on the pursuing officers near a junction at Community 6. The police returned fire, hitting both suspects, who fell off the motorbike.
They were transported to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have been deposited at the morgue for identification and autopsy.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the retrieval of a 9mm pistol loaded with ammunition, three mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a motorbike key, and cash amounting to GH¢11,390. Police also recovered a spent cartridge from the robbery scene.
Further investigations revealed that a Ghana Card found on the suspects belongs to the victim.
The injured vendor is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
The Tema Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to maintaining safety and security, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
