President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking, digitized reintroduction of road tolls in Ghana, leveraging the country’s robust mobile money and Ghana Card infrastructure.
Speaking at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit in Accra, the President detailed how the new system will streamline toll collection and enhance revenue generation for national development.
Under the proposed system, vehicle owners will no longer need to stop at traditional toll booths. Instead, toll payments will be automatically deducted from the mobile money or bank accounts linked to the vehicle owner’s Ghana Card.
This innovative approach is designed to eliminate congestion at toll points and ensure a seamless travel experience for motorists.
President Mahama emphasized the efficiency of the new digital tolling system.
“In our recent budget, we announced the reintroduction of road tolls. The question has been about the best way to implement it. Fortunately, every vehicle is now linked to the owner’s Ghana Card, which makes digitalization straightforward,” he stated.
He further explained, “We no longer require the old toll gates or the cards that drivers had to stop and swipe. Everything will be digital. For example, If it’s 1 Ghana cedi and then you cross the East Legon Bridge, a simple camera will capture your vehicle details and automatically charge your account. The bill will be sent directly to your mobile money or bank account, ensuring a hassle-free process.”
The President highlighted the benefits of the new system, noting that it will not only improve the convenience for drivers but also boost government revenue.
“With this system, everyone pays their fair share, and the process is transparent and efficient. The Finance Minister and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana will be happy,” he added with a smile.
