President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed concern over the spread of misinformation and disinformation in the political arena, especially with the 2024 December elections nearing.

Speaking at the 2024 Ghana Report Summit on combating misinformation ahead of the elections, Nana Akufo-Addo recounted several instances of false information directed against him since 2012.

He highlighted past incidents, including his alleged arrest in London for drug possession in 2012, fabricated quotes aimed at inciting ethnic tensions, and claims in 2016 that he was involved in the death of his late wife.

The recent misinformation he said is a fabricated document titled “Agyapadie” which according to him is being circulated by opposition operatives, alleging that the New Patriotic Party plans to annex state assets.

He recounted “2012 elections saw false reports of my alleged arrest in London for drug possession, fabricated quotes designed to stir ethnic tensions. 2016 was led by sympathisers of the opposition that I had killed my late wife.

“Today, few months to the 2024 December elections they are at it again. Fabricated document titled Agyapadie is being peddled around by operators of the opposition as evidence of a grand scheme by my party to annex the asserts of the state.

“These experiences underscore the importance of discerning truth from falsehood and the need for all of us to remain vigilant against the dangers of misinformation and disinformation.”

Nana Akufo-Addo advised that “as we approach the 2024 general election we have to address these challenges head on”.
