The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST) has honoured renowned architect and founding Hall Master of Unity Hall, Professor John Owusu Addo, with the unveiling of a bust in recognition of his role in establishing the hall and shaping its enduring legacy.
The ceremony also featured the launch of Unity Hall’s official commemorative cloth. Hall Master of Unity Hall, Professor Richard Avuglah, described the occasion as more than a ceremonial event, saying it celebrated the hall’s history, heritage and identity.
He said that since its establishment in 1968, Unity Hall has become one of KNUST’s most recognisable halls of residence, producing graduates who have excelled in academia, public service, business and national leadership.
According to Professor Avuglah, Professor Owusu Addo, as both the architect and first Hall Master, envisioned not merely a physical structure but a community where scholarship, discipline, leadership and unity would flourish.
“The bust we unveil today is more than a work of art. It is a permanent symbol of our appreciation for a man whose vision and dedication laid the foundations for Unity Hall’s enduring traditions and values,” he said.
Professor Avuglah commended the alumni, designers, University Management and other stakeholders whose financial, logistical and technical support made the projects possible. He said their collective efforts reflected the enduring bond among members of the Unity Hall fraternity.
He added that the official hall cloth reinforces the hall’s identity and shared heritage, describing it as a symbol of pride, unity and belonging for generations of “Continentals.”
KNUST Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Asamoah, paid tribute to Professor Owusu Addo’s dual contribution as both the architect and first Hall Master of Unity Hall.
He said Professor Owusu Addo’s architectural vision created more than an impressive building, establishing a vibrant community that has nurtured generations of scholars while fostering a strong sense of belonging.
Professor Asamoah said Professor Owusu Addo also instilled values of excellence, discipline and camaraderie that have become defining characteristics of the hall.
“In recognition of his enduring legacy, we are unveiling a bust in his honour, a lasting symbol of gratitude and remembrance. This bust stands as a testament to his foresight and dedication, reminding all who pass through these doors of the man whose vision shaped our history,” he said.
He added that while Professor Owusu Addo’s contributions are now immortalised in bronze, his greatest legacy lives on through the generations of students and alumni shaped by the values and culture he established.
