Many schools in the Upper East Region continue to hold classes under trees despite years of interventions by development partners, the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has revealed.
The Minister disclosed this on Monday during a meeting with a World Vision Ghana delegation in Bolgatanga, where he appealed for greater support to address the region’s educational infrastructure deficit.
He said the Regional Coordinating Council had already submitted a list of schools requiring assistance to the organisation and welcomed its decision to refer the request to partner NGOs working in the education sector.
Hon. Akamugri acknowledged World Vision’s long-standing contribution to the region, describing its interventions in education and community development as transformative.
Drawing on his 16 years as an Assembly Member in the Bongo District, he recalled how the construction of a World Vision Resource Centre provided the district with its first permanent meeting facility and remains a valuable community asset.
He also praised the organisation for investing in education, saying many beneficiaries of its programmes have become responsible and accomplished members of society.
The Minister, however, noted that poverty and limited economic opportunities continue to hinder development in the region. He appealed for support for mechanised boreholes to promote year-round farming, particularly for women, as a means of improving household incomes.
He further briefed the delegation on the outcome of the recently concluded Prosperity through Enterprise, Agriculture, Resilience and Livelihoods (PEARL) consultation forum, describing the document as a roadmap for the region’s development and indicating that it would be shared with World Vision to align future interventions.
Earlier, the World Vision delegation, led by Joshua Baido, commended the Regional Coordinating Council for its collaboration and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting development initiatives across the Upper East Region.
