The Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has reiterated the government’s commitment to renaming the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) after its founder, Nana Opoku Ampomah.
This assurance was given during a courtesy call on Nana Ampomah, who is also the Chief of Amoafo, in the Ashanti Region’s Bekwai constituency as part of his campaign tour in the Ashanti region.
On August 28, 2023, Joseph Kwaku Opoku-Ampomah, the visionary who founded what is now the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), celebrated his 95th birthday. It was a joyous occasion marking this significant milestone.
However, one much-anticipated gift remains unfulfilled: the renaming of the University after its founder, who also serves as the Paramount Chief of the Amoafo-Bekwai Traditional Area under the stool name Nana Opoku-Ampomah.
Five years have passed since the government first announced this promise. The announcement was made by President Nana Akufo-Addo on April 25, 2018, at UPSA’s Fourth Special Congregation.
During the event, the University conferred an honorary doctorate on Nana Opoku-Ampomah in recognition of his contributions to education in Ghana.
Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, affectionately known as Napo, assured that the constitutional and legal processes required to rename the institution to ‘Opoku-Ampomah University of Professional Studies’ are already underway.
Dr. Prempeh also assured that, for Amansie East to receive the development it needs, the district will be divided. He highlighted ongoing improvements in infrastructure, power stability, and healthcare, alongside Dr. Bawumia’s bold initiatives for job creation and economic growth. He urged the community to continue rallying support for Dr. Bawumia and Parliamentary Candidate Ralph Poku-Adusei to ensure a resounding victory in the upcoming December elections.
The Krontihene of Amoafo, in the Bekwai constituency, also called on the government to expedite the renaming of UPSA in honor of Nana Opoku Ampomah.
