Former Ghana football star Mohammed Polo has called on the current Black Stars players to uphold the rich legacy established by Ghana’s football legends.
His remarks come amid the team’s recent struggles, including consecutive eliminations from the Africa Cup of Nations and a disappointing start to the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Ghana’s qualifying campaign has been rocky, with the team managing only a 1-1 draw against Niger at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Morocco, following a 1-0 defeat to Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium. These results have intensified the pressure on the Black Stars, who are yet to secure a win in the current qualifying series.
Speaking to Koforidua-based Bryt FM, Polo emphasized the need for the current squad to honor the legacy of past Black Stars teams.
“We should know things are not the way it used to be. We have to change our attitude as a football nation. The current players must know there is a legacy to protect. We left a mark during our playing days and it will be prudent for the current generation to raise and not downgrade it. It’s a huge challenge so they have to play above themselves” he said.
The Black Stars will look to turn their fortunes around when they face Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan in a crucial doubleheader in October. Sudan, under Appiah, has been in strong form, securing five wins from seven games so far.
Otto Addo and his team will be eager to secure positive results and reignite their AFCON qualifying campaign.
