Former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, has been elected as the Ashanti Regional representative for the Council of State.
Obimpeh secured victory with 49 votes, defeating his main contender, Nana Ayeboafo Nkansah Boadu, the Chief of Agric Nzemaa, who garnered 35 votes.
The election saw an impressive voter turnout, with over 90% of the 85 out of 86 delegates casting their ballots to elect one representative from a poll of 12 aspirants.
Unlike the initial election attempt on Tuesday, February 11, which was marred by chaos caused by alleged NDC-affiliated thugs from Obuasi, the re-run was conducted under strict security measures.
The police ensured a peaceful process by tightening security at the Prempeh Assembly Hall, the venue for the election.
Only accredited delegates, Electoral Commission (EC) officials, candidates’ agents, and the media were granted access to the election grounds.
The enhanced security approach created a controlled environment, preventing any potential disruptions.
Yaw Owusu Obimpeh’s victory secures him a seat on the Council of State, where he will serve as an advisor to the President on matters concerning the Ashanti Region.
