Former Chief Justice and current Council of State Member, Her Ladyship Sophia Akuffo, has reiterated the need for a more transparent and merit-based system for appointing judges to Ghana’s superior courts.
Speaking on recent developments surrounding a petition for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo and concerns over the nomination of politically exposed persons to the judiciary, Justice Akuffo clarified that the matter has not yet come before the Council of State.
She refrained from making any judgments on the petition, stating that she has only seen reports in the media and not the official response from the Chief Justice.
However, addressing broader concerns regarding judicial appointments, the former Chief Justice emphasized the need for reforms in the selection process of Supreme Court judges.
She stressed that Ghana, in the 21st century, must adopt a more transparent and structured approach to judicial appointments to ensure that merit remains the key criterion.
“I have spoken about this many times, and I still stand by it. The methodology for the appointment and selection of judges, particularly to the superior courts, needs to be reviewed. We must ensure that the process is always based on merit,” she stated.
Her comments align with long-standing calls for judicial reforms to enhance the independence, professionalism, and public confidence in the judiciary.
