Minister for Trade and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu- Adjare has called on traders to show generosity by reducing their prices, emphasizing that such a move would inspire the government to sustain its efforts in creating a thriving economy that benefits every Ghanaian.
Speaking on the Pulse segment at JoyNews monitored by Kumasimail, the minister praised the progress made under the leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama, highlighting the improved business environment that has been cultivated.
“If the government has been able to achieve this, it is important that everyone in the country benefits from it. We continue to engage with the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and other trade bodies to ensure they appreciate the business environment created for all Ghanaians,” she stated.
When host Elton Brobbey questioned whether the appreciation of the cedi would be sustained beyond a short-term gesture, the minister expressed confidence.
“If all of us work together, I am sure that this appreciation will be sustained,” she responded optimistically.
Regarding the timeline for further discussions with the trading community, Minister Elizabeth revealed that she had already initiated talks with the president of GUTA.
“We will speak again this evening, and I am confident that by Wednesday morning, we will have made significant progress,” she said.
The minister underscored the government’s role in creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, citing the strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi as a key factor.
“Whenever the cedi depreciates, traders tend to increase their prices. It is only fair and reasonable that prices are adjusted downward to reflect the positive measures the government has put in place,” she explained.
She further stressed that traders’ willingness to reduce prices would serve as an encouragement for the government to continue its good work.
“Government does not control prices, but it is our duty to create the environment for businesses to prosper. It is only fair that traders also reduce prices so that everyone benefits, including themselves,” Minister Elizabeth concluded.
