The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarack Mohammed, has expressed firm support for a special operation launched by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to tackle organized street begging by foreign nationals in the Greater Accra.
The initiative, which began in Accra, targets individuals involved in street begging syndicates, many of whom are reported to have entered the country through unapproved routes, avoiding key immigration and health screenings.
Alhaji Mubarack, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for the Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region, emphasized that the influx of undocumented migrants engaging in street begging poses both a national security risk and a threat to Ghana’s international image.
“This activity poses a national security risk and damages the image of our country,” he said in a statement. “Many of these individuals enter Ghana through unapproved routes, bypassing essential immigration and medical checks” he spoke through Facebook Post.
The Interior Minister urged the public to remain calm and support the operation, calling on citizens to cooperate fully with security agencies as they carry out the exercise.
“I urge all Ghanaians to remain calm and support this important exercise. Let us cooperate with the security teams as they work to protect our streets and uphold national safety,” he added.
The Immigration Service’s operation is part of broader efforts to curb irregular migration and maintain public order, especially in urban areas increasingly affected by the presence of street children and beggars linked to transnational networks.
