The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi, who doubles as the CEO of Akonta Mining Company Limited has disclosed that he is struggling to cater for his family following government-imposed sanctions on his finances.
A joint security force made up of National Security and police personnel on Friday, 23rd May 2025, attempted to arrest Chairman Wontumi at his Daaban residence in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.
The unsuccessful arrested happened after he allegedly declined an invitation from the CID headquarters to assist with investigations into his alleged role in illegal mining activities by Akonta Mining Company Limited in some forest reserves, among others.
Speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM’s political talk show hosted by Osei Bonsu, popularly known as OB on the matter, Chairman Wontumi said the ruling government is targeting him unfairly.
He said, “Currently, as I speak, all my bank accounts have been frozen by the government. Now I don’t know how to pay my kids’ school fees.” He added, “I am currently experiencing the same political attack I faced under the previous NDC regime, under the same President John Dramani Mahama between 2012 to 2016. My accounts have been frozen. How can I survive and eat? At the moment, the God of David will take care of me.”
He further stated, “The sanctions the government has put on me are worse than what the European Union imposed on Russia.”
He, however, explained that he has not received any invitation from the NIB but rather from the CID headquarters in Accra, and expressed his readiness to honor the invitation on Monday, 26th May 2025.
He also dismissed claims that his call for Ghanaians to rise and defend him from what he described as persecution by the government is being mocked on social and traditional media instead of receiving public support and sympathy.
He said, “People who claim my call didn’t yield results have no idea what happened in front of my house. Hundreds of people stepped out in my defense. If the police and the national security had not left the place, the crowd would have overpowered the security personnel, leading to another unfortunate development,” he said.
