With just hours to go before a decisive parliamentary election rerun in Ablekuma North, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has declared that the contest between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is “neck and neck,” with only a 48-vote difference separating the two parties after a mini-collation of results from 262 polling stations.
He expressed satisfaction with the figures and exuded confidence in the NDC’s prospects for victory in the rerun scheduled for Friday, July 11.
“We are satisfied with the figures and convinced we will win come tomorrow,” he stated, underscoring the party’s preparedness and the thorough training of its polling agents.
Speaking in an interview with Starr News monitored by Kumasimail, Tanko-Computer criticized the NPP’s internal disarray, noting that their parliamentary candidate has defied party directives by continuing to campaign despite orders to the contrary.
“Look, these people (NPP) are the most unprincipled political party you can think of. I am not surprised because they are the most disorganized political party, and they are once again exhibiting themselves,” he said.
“For the past three days, we have been seeing them campaign everywhere around Ablekuma North at night.”
Tanko-Computer emphasized that the NDC is well-prepared for the election, having trained agents and closely monitored ballot papers.
“We just finished collating results from 262 polling stations with the Electoral Commission, and we are satisfied with the figures. We are ready for battle tomorrow and confident of victory,” he stated.
Addressing claims by the NPP of a significant lead, Tanko-Computer said, “They have been talking all over the place, quoting over 400 votes, but today they have been exposed. The difference is just 48 votes.”
He predicted a decisive win for the NDC in the rerun, which covers 19 polling stations, asserting, “Out of the 19 polling stations, I can assure you we will win not less than 15.”
Responding to assertions that the 19 polling stations are NPP strongholds, Tanko-Computer dismissed the claim, saying, “NPP doesn’t have any stronghold anywhere in this country now. In the 2024 election, we snatched more than 20 seats from them that used to be their strongholds. They don’t have any strongholds anymore.
“They don’t have any strongholds; they rig elections left and right, but now they don’t have that luxury they can’t,” he added.
When asked about the NPP’s intensified campaign efforts and financial support for their candidate, Tanko-Computer remained unfazed.
“You saw what happened in 2024; it was more massive than what they are doing today. Despite the money they spent then, they only secured 38.2%. They haven’t learnt their lessons; they think they can buy the people. Look at the monies they are pumping into the campaign at the last minute,” he said.
