Kwabena Agyapong Promises ‘Good Change’ in NPP Presidential Race

Agyapong stresses need for party renewal and criticizes exclusion of former polling station executives from presidential delegate voting

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and aspiring flagbearer, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, has made a strong appeal to party decision makers to cast their votes in his favor as the NPP’s Presidential candidate for the 2028 elections.

Addressing supporters in a recent interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen program monitored by Kumasimail.com, Agyapong positioned himself as the candidate of transformation, urging party members to reject the status quo if they desire meaningful change within the party and the country.

“If they want good change, I am an option. But if the status quo is what they want, there are other candidates for that,” he stated firmly.

Agyapong argued that the party must break away from past practices to galvanize youth support and re-energize the NPP’s base, which he believes has been neglected in recent years.

He added “But I think we have to make a serious departure from what we’ve been used to in recent times; that’s what will give the youth and our party, who feel we’ve neglected them, hope.”

Turning to a contentious issue within the party, the eligibility of former polling station executives to vote in the upcoming presidential primary, Agyapong expressed regret that his proposal to include all past polling station executives in the voting process was not adopted.

He believes this inclusion would have strengthened the party’s democratic foundations and better represented grassroots voices.

“In my opinion, all former polling station executives should be allowed to vote, but that was not accepted,” he explained.

“In party affairs, many voices are involved, and not everything you wish for is accepted, so I have come to understand their position. However, I have always felt it would have been beneficial for our party if former polling station executives were included.”

Agyapong went further to propose a practical solution for polling station executives election, suggesting the rescheduling of polling station executives’ elections to December, rather than February.

This adjustment, he claimed, would avoid disenfranchising thousands of members as happened in the current process.

“If I were the current executives, I would say the polling station executives’ tenure ends in February. January and February are not too long, but since the presidential election cannot be extended to March, we could organize polling station executive elections in December for this special reason. That way, no one gets disenfranchised. Currently, about 80,000 people (40,000 times two) are being excluded from the presidential ballot. That simply cannot be right,” he lamented, while emphasizing his respect for party decisions despite disagreeing with this particular one.
