A presenter with Kumasi-based Wontumi TV and Wontumi Radio has allegedly been detained by suspected national security operatives, just days after making on-air allegations linking President John Dramani Mahama to last week’s fatal Ghana Air Force helicopter crash.
Lawyer for the station, Kwame Adom Appiah, confirmed that Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare was taken into custody in Ejisu, Ashanti Region, on Tuesday, August 12.
Mr. Appiah described the circumstances surrounding the arrest as “unusual,” noting that enquiries at the Kumasi office of the National Security Secretariat yielded denials of any knowledge of the operation.
“For now, I am making a formal complaint at the Ejisu Police Station because, as we speak, his whereabouts are unknown,” he told reporters.
The reported arrest comes shortly after Wontumi TV issued a “sincere and unreserved” apology to President Mahama, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the public over the presenter’s comments, describing them as unfounded and contrary to the station’s editorial values.
