The Minority in Parliament has refuted claims by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, that more than 6,500 nurses were recruited by the previous Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration without financial clearance.

According to the Minister, the affected nurses who have not been paid for over ten months are expected to receive their salaries by next month.

However, addressing journalists in Parliament, the Ranking Member on the Health Committee, Dr. Ayew Afriye, described the Minister’s assertion as misleading.

He clarified that the previous administration had duly secured financial clearance for the recruitment of health professionals in July 2024.

Dr. Afriye explained that the current challenge arose because the Health Ministry failed to renew the clearance after it expired in December 2024.

“The Nana Addo administration obtained clearance for the recruitment exercise last year. The real issue is that the current minister failed to renew it after its expiration, which has led to the delay in payments,” Dr. Afriye stated.

He therefore urged the Health Ministry to take responsibility for the situation and expedite the necessary processes to ensure the affected nurses receive their outstanding salaries promptly.

The Minority’s response comes amid growing concerns from health professionals over unpaid allowances and delays in financial clearance renewals that continue to affect the health sector.
