Tension flared at the bustling Magazine–Newroad industrial area in Tafo, Kumasi, on Friday when a group of mechanics clashed with security forces during a protest against what they described as an “unlawful and unannounced eviction” from their workshops. The confrontation led to the arrest of several individuals.
According to eyewitnesses, confusion erupted early in the morning when mechanics arrived at their workstations only to find parts of the area barricaded by unidentified persons.
The workers, shocked by the sudden development, accused the supposed developers of attempting to seize the land without prior notice or consultation.
Their protest quickly drew the attention of a joint security team made up of police and military personnel, who were deployed to prevent escalation.
However, the standoff intensified, resulting in the arrest of some demonstrators.
“They want to take over our land without any notice. They brought police and soldiers here to intimidate us, but we won’t be silent,” one angry mechanic told reporters. “Unless the soldiers plan to sleep here tonight, we’ll continue to resist.”
While details about those behind the alleged eviction remain unclear, sources close to the situation revealed that the action may have been triggered by a court ruling in favor of a private developer.
The judgment, reportedly delivered some time ago, granted ownership of the contested land to the developer.
However, the affected mechanics maintain that they were never formally notified of the impending eviction, describing the operation as abrupt and unfair.
As of press time, a strong security presence remained in the area to maintain order, with officers monitoring the situation closely.
The aggrieved workers have vowed to continue pressing for answers from both local authorities and the alleged developer.
