The Ashanti Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed deep concern and solidarity with a group of journalists who were involved in a road accident while covering illegal mining (galamsey) activities in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

In a statement issued and signed by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GJA, Mr. Kofi Adu Domfeh, the Association described the incident as “unfortunate” and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety, welfare, and protection of all journalists undertaking risky field assignments.

“We stand in full solidarity with our affected colleagues in this difficult moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families, and their media organizations,” the statement read.

“The safety, welfare, and protection of journalists remain paramount to the GJA, and this unfortunate incident underscores the inherent risks associated with the critical work our members undertake in pursuit of the public interest.”

Support for Affected Journalists

The GJA leadership in the Ashanti Region said it is actively engaging relevant authorities and partners to ensure that the affected journalists receive the necessary medical and emotional support.

“The leadership of the GJA in the Ashanti Region wishes to assure all affected journalists of its unwavering support,” Mr. Domfeh stated.

The Association commended journalists for their courage and dedication in bringing national attention to the destructive impact of illegal mining, noting that their watchdog role is vital to Ghana’s fight against environmental degradation.

Call for Stricter Safety Measures

The GJA also used the opportunity to call on all institutions and agencies that engage media practitioners in field operations—especially in high-risk zones such as illegal mining sites—to adhere strictly to safety protocols and ensure proper planning and coordination before deployment.

“As journalists continue to play their watchdog role in bringing national attention to environmental and social challenges, it is imperative that their safety is given topmost priority,” the Association emphasized.

Background

The accident reportedly occurred while a team of journalists was covering an official EPA assignment on illegal mining activities in the Ashanti Region.

Details about the number of casualties or the extent of injuries sustained were yet to be confirmed at the time of publication.

The GJA assured its members that it remains resolute in supporting colleagues through these trying times and reaffirmed its ongoing advocacy for enhanced safety measures for journalists nationwide.
