A 30-year-old man has been arrested after a stray bullet injured the chief of Adanse Dompoase, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu II, during a funeral ceremony in Obuasi on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council said the incident occurred when a musketeer discharged a firearm at the event, resulting in the chief being struck and rushed to hospital. He has since been treated and discharged.
According to Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, police intervened swiftly and arrested the suspect, identified as Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is currently assisting with investigations.
The shooting happened as the Dompoasehene exchanged pleasantries with the Omanhene of Asebu Kwamankese and other traditional leaders attending the final funeral rites of the late mother of the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin.
Dr. Amoakohene said the incident underscores the importance of the nationwide temporary ban on the use of firearms at funerals and traditional gatherings.
“The directive remains a vital public safety measure designed to protect lives, prevent injuries and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified atmosphere,” he said, urging full compliance.
The Regional Coordinating Council called on the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue and efforts are made to maintain peace and order across the region.
