Parliament has enacted a new law to repeal and replace the existing statutes regulating the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, introducing major reforms designed to enhance the institution’s governance and administrative efficiency.
Under the new legal framework, KNUST will now have two Pro Vice-Chancellors, a significant shift aimed at bolstering academic management, ensuring stronger coordination across departments, and supporting the University’s growing portfolio in research, innovation, and teaching.
The legislation also reconstitutes the University Council to promote inclusivity in decision-making.
In the new setup, the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) will no longer have a dedicated representative; instead, that slot will go to Junior Staff.
Moreover, Non-Teaching Staff will now gain official representation on the Council for the first time.
Another key amendment concerns the tenure of senior administrators.
The Registrar’s term of office has been fixed at four years, renewable once for another four-year period.
A similar arrangement applies to the University’s top financial administrator, whose title has now been changed from Finance Officer to Director of Finance.
These reforms mark a decisive step toward modernizing KNUST’s governance structure, aligning its operations with contemporary standards of university management.
