The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested thirty-eight (38) suspected illegal miners during an intelligence-led operation at the outskirts of Ntoranang, near New Abirem in the Eastern Region.
The operation, which took place between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026, targeted illegal mining activities being carried out in a palm plantation within the area.
According to the Police, seventeen (17) of the suspects are Burkinabe nationals, while twenty-one (21) are Ghanaians. Among those arrested are nine (9) juveniles aged between 13 and 17 years.
“Seventeen (17) of the suspects are Burkinabe nationals whilst Twenty-One (21) of them are Ghanaians. Nine (9) are juveniles with ages ranging from 13 to 17 years”.
Items retrieved at the site included water pumping machines, power plants, water hoses, and makeshift shelters.
The police indicated that the equipment discovered at the scene were set ablaze.
All thirty-eight suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. They are expected to be arraigned before court on Monday, March 2, 2026, to face prosecution.
