Assemblies of God, Ghana has publicly expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama following a decision by Lincoln University to withdraw an honorary doctorate it had planned to confer on him.
In a statement issued by the church’s leadership, the organisation said it was “compelled to rally swiftly” behind the president after the university in Pennsylvania withdrew the honour.
According to the statement, the university cited Mahama’s position on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill currently before Ghana’s Parliament as the reason for the decision.
Assemblies of God, Ghana said the move by the university did not dishonour the president but rather affirmed what it described as his “ironclad stand” on moral and family values.
The church also stated that Mahama’s position on homosexuality had remained consistent since before the 2024 general elections.
The statement further urged members of the church and the wider Christian community to remain firm in their spiritual and moral principles and to support the president’s stance on the issue. It also called on Christians across the country to pray “with intensity and tenacity” for the nation.
The document was signed by Ernest Birikorang on behalf of the church leadership and included contact details for the organisation’s national office in Accra.
The development follows growing debate in Ghana and internationally over the proposed bill and its implications for human rights, religious beliefs and national values.
