The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed as false a widely circulated notice purportedly issued by Cambodian immigration authorities directing African nationals, including Ghanaians, to leave Cambodia or face arrest and penalties.
In a press release issued on Thursday, May 29, 2026, the Ministry said the document, which has been circulating on social and traditional media platforms, was not issued by any official institution in Cambodia.
According to the Ministry, the fake notice alleged that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and other African countries resident in Cambodia had been ordered to leave the country by May 31, 2026, or risk arrest, imprisonment and financial sanctions for immigration violations.
However, following diplomatic engagements with Cambodian authorities, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed that the notice was fabricated.
“The Ministry wishes to assure the public that the said notice is absolutely fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia,” the statement said.
The Ministry further disclosed that Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration under the Ministry of Interior had issued an official clarification describing the circulating notice as “completely untrue.”
The public and media organizations have therefore been advised to disregard the document and avoid sharing unverified information capable of causing fear and anxiety among affected persons and their families.
Meanwhile, the Ministry acknowledged that some Ghanaian nationals resident in Cambodia had earlier expressed a desire to voluntarily return home.
It said the Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to Cambodia, had already facilitated the evacuation of 85 Ghanaians between March and May 2026.
The Ministry added that arrangements were underway to evacuate an additional 76 Ghanaians currently in Cambodia who have also indicated their willingness to return to Ghana.
The statement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare and safety of Ghanaians abroad and commended the Government of Cambodia for its cooperation during the process.
The Ministry further urged the public to rely solely on official sources for information concerning Ghanaian nationals abroad.
