The Attorney-General has raised a preliminary legal objection to a motion filed by lawyer Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi seeking permission to withdraw his legal services for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, in the ongoing Samreboi illegal mining case.
In a notice filed at the High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra, the Republic indicated that it will oppose the application on two grounds — jurisdiction and capacity. The notice was signed by the Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai.
The objection relates to an application by Mr Appiah-Kubi asking the court for leave to stop representing Mr Boasiako and Akonta Mining Company Limited, who are among the accused persons in the case.
Court documents indicate that Mr Appiah-Kubi filed the withdrawal application after serving as counsel for the accused persons during the trial. The application is expected to be heard by the High Court on June 15, 2026.
Mr Appiah-Kubi has explained that his decision to withdraw is contained in an affidavit filed before the court, while citing concerns about his ability to continue effectively handling the matter.
The case involves Mr Boasiako, one other accused person and Akonta Mining Company Limited, who are facing charges connected to alleged illegal mining activities at Samreboi and related mining rights issues. Mr Boasiako has denied the allegations.
The development comes as the trial approaches a critical stage, with the court having scheduled July 3, 2026, for judgment in the matter.
