Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Limited’s operational fleet has plunged from more than 500 buses in 2016 to about 135 buses, with only 115 actively serving commuters, Managing Director Kale Cezar has disclosed.
He said the decline had left the state-owned transport company grappling with severe operational challenges, including huge debts, inadequate spare parts, low staff motivation and an unsustainable staff-to-bus ratio.
According to Mr. Kale, about 208 buses were completely damaged and beyond repair by the time he assumed office in 2025.
He said some of the buses that had broken down could not be returned to service because the company lacked essential spare parts, including tyres.
Mr. Kale said the situation became apparent when he first arrived at the company’s premises in 2025, describing the challenges confronting MMT as overwhelming.
He recalled that when the NDC left office in 2016, MMT had more than 500 active buses, with over 400 operating on the roads.
Despite the difficult circumstances, he said his faith gave him the courage to take on the challenge, guided by the belief that God would not place a burden on a person beyond their capacity to bear.
