Osei Appiah Amankwaa, a visually impaired University student from farming community of Nkurakan in the Yilo Krobo District in Eastern region was amongst latest batch of 108 persons with disabilities provided support by the Yilo Krobo Assembly through the Disability Fund.

However, Osei Appiah, who is preparing to enter Level 200, says access to a Latop is a priority need which would significantly improve his ability to read, write and undertake academic work independently.

“learning devices like the computer is very important because the Braille is fading out recently because reading is not fast. With the help of the computer, you’ll be able to learn, read, write fast and you’ll be able to do other things that the sighted colleagues are doing,” he said.

She said she currently relies on the support of friends and fellow students to cope with some aspects of his academic work.

“I am coping with it on campus with the help of friends and other students,” he said.

She is therefore appealing for support to acquire a Laptop.

“If I get a computer, I’ll be much happier,” he said.

Her visual impairment began in 2012 when she was about 14 years old. After several visits to the hospital, she was diagnosed with glaucoma and was informed that his sight could not be restored.

“We’ve been to the hospital several times but they said nothing can be done, so I have to go to school,” he recounted.

Despite the setback, Osei Appiah continued her education, attended Akropong School for the Blind, and subsequently to Okuapeman Senior High School school before gaining admission to UCC.

Yilo Krobo Supports 108 Persons With Disabilities

Menwhile ,the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly has increased support for persons with disabilities through the Persons with Disabilities Common Fund.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Yilo Krobo, Francis Akumatey Addo, commended President John Mahama for increasing the allocation to the fund from three to five percent.

He said the increase was enabling government to extend meaningful support to more persons with disabilities and help them improve their livelihoods.

The MCE made the remarks on Thursday, September 10, 2026, when the Social Welfare and Community Development Department of the Yilo Krobo Municipality supported 108 persons with disabilities with livelihood equipment and other items.

They included 27 beneficiaries from the Somanya zonal area and 81 from the middle and upper zones covering Nkrakan, Agogo, Nsutapong and Sikabeng.

The support included chest freezers, refrigerators, fufu machines, tomato machines, cassava processing machines, industrial and knitting machines, polytanks, farm inputs, livestock, assistive devices and cash support for selected livelihood activities.

The intervention is intended to enable beneficiaries establish or expand income-generating activities and improve their socio-economic well-being.

The Municipal Social Welfare Director Na-Afua Tettey urged beneficiaries to use the items for their intended purposes and maintain them properly.

She said monitoring of previous beneficiaries had produced positive results, although some challenges remained, including the sale of items received and failure by some beneficiaries to use the support for its intended purpose.
