The University for Development Studies (UDS) have reached the final of the 12th All Africa University Games in Cairo after a commanding 4-0 victory over Egypt’s Delta University.
The defending champions secured their place in a second consecutive continental final with a dominant performance despite temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius.
UDS took control of the game after surviving an early scare from Delta University, who missed an opportunity to take the lead in the 14th minute.
The Ghanaian side broke the deadlock just before half-time when Abdul Nuhu Akusaayela headed home from a cross following a fine combination between George Renchi and Ezedeen Alhassan.
Captain Mohammed Asigri doubled the advantage just two minutes after the restart, firing a powerful effort into the net in the 47th minute.
UDS continued to dominate proceedings, with their attacking players repeatedly exposing the Delta defence.
Alhassan Zakaria made it 3-0 in the 68th minute after beating two defenders before calmly finishing his opportunity.
The Ghanaians completed the rout in the 85th minute through substitute Abdul Majeed Suglo, who showed composure inside the penalty area to score UDS’ fourth goal.
The victory means UDS have now scored nine goals and conceded just two in the competition.
The result also makes UDS the first university to reach two consecutive All Africa University Games football finals, adding another milestone to their growing football record.
UDS previously made history by becoming the first African university to win the World University Football Championship.
The defending champions will now await the winner of the second semi-final between the University of Hertfordshire and the Federation of Guinea Universities in the final.
