NPP parliamentary aspirant for Nandom, Lawyer Sylvester Isang, has taken aim at the traditional practice of offering delegates food items and small cash incentives in exchange for votes, saying his campaign is instead focused on interventions that continue to benefit delegates beyond elections.
Mr Isang says 17 students in tertiary institutions across Ghana are now benefiting from his scholarship support, with six delegates having their wards placed on full scholarships to study Law and another delegate’s ward having their medical school fees fully absorbed for the current academic year.
“Instead of providing rice, sardine, oil or GH¢100 to delegates and asking for their votes, I have announced to them concrete policies that will address their welfare beyond elections,” he said.
He said the six beneficiaries pursuing LL.B programmes would have their academic fees paid for the entire duration of their programmes, while the medical student has received support for the current academic year.
Mr Isang said the scholarship initiative reflects the approach he intends to bring to political leadership, arguing that delegates and party members should benefit from policies that address their long-term needs rather than receive short-term incentives during internal elections.
He cited his record as Assembly Member for the Biiregang Electoral Area, where he said he introduced similar educational interventions.
According to him, the scholarship policy would be expanded if he becomes the NPP parliamentary candidate or MP for Nandom.
He also said the interventions would not depend on the continued existence of the delegate system.
“Even when the delegates system is scrapped, these policies would be maintained for them as party executives,” he said.
The latest intervention brings to 17 the number of students Mr Isang says he is currently supporting through his scholarship programme, reinforcing education as a central plank of his campaign for the Nandom NPP parliamentary slot.
His latest statement comes as the contest for the NPP parliamentary candidacy in Nandom takes shape, with aspirants seeking to persuade delegates ahead of the party’s internal selection process.
