The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed Mr Zakaria Abdulai to step aside from his candidature in the Juaben Constituency to allow for an unhindered investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
The directive, announced in a press release dated October 20, 2026, follows further consideration by the party’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the matter, which was the subject of an earlier statement issued on October 19.
According to the party, the decision was taken in the overriding interest of transparency and accountability to ensure that the police investigation proceeds without obstruction.
The statement, signed by the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, emphasised that the decision should not be interpreted as a determination of the merits of the allegations against Mr Abdulai.
The party stressed that he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence while investigations continue.
“The Party trusts that the CID will conduct a thorough, fair and expeditious investigation, and will be guided by its outcome,” the statement said.
The NDC also directed the Ashanti Regional Election Committee and the Juaben Constituency Election Committee to take note of the decision and act accordingly.
The latest directive signals the party’s decision to allow the investigative process to proceed while maintaining that the allegations against Mr Abdulai must be assessed through a fair and impartial process.
The outcome of the CID investigation is expected to inform the party’s subsequent position on the matter.
