The Minister for the Interior, on the advice of the National Security Council, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Hamile Township and its surrounding communities in the Lambussie District of the Upper West Region, following escalating tensions in the border town.
The curfew, imposed by Executive Instrument, takes immediate effect and runs from 6:00 pm to 5:00 am daily.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the Ministry of the Interior urged chiefs, opinion leaders, youth and residents of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the prevailing challenges and resort to non-violent means of expressing their grievances.
The government also announced a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition and other offensive weapons within Hamile Township and its environs.
According to the statement, anyone found in possession of arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
The curfew follows growing unrest in Hamile after a deadly explosion involving officers of the Ghana Immigration Service and three suspected smugglers reportedly claimed four lives, including two immigration officers and two teenage suspects.
The incident sparked anger among sections of the youth, who reportedly took to the streets, burning car tyres and attempting to set ablaze structures and offices belonging to the Ghana Immigration Service.
The situation subsequently escalated, with two civilians reportedly sustaining gunshot wounds to their legs after military personnel intervened to prevent the youth from setting Immigration Service facilities ablaze. The injured civilians are receiving treatment at the Hamile Polyclinic.

Military personnel were earlier deployed to the area following reports of rising tensions.
The imposition of the curfew is expected to support security operations and efforts to restore calm in the affected communities.
Government has called on traditional authorities, community leaders and residents to cooperate with security agencies and use peaceful means to address their grievances.
The situation remains developing as authorities take steps to restore law and order in the troubled border community.
