The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has briefed the Energy Commission on the ongoing power supply challenges in the Ashanti Region and measures being implemented in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to address the situation.
The briefing took place at a stakeholders’ meeting involving officials of the two institutions, where ECG outlined the causes of the power challenges and interventions being undertaken to improve electricity supply across the region.
During the meeting, Ing. Apau highlighted the establishment of a coordinated response platform involving ECG General Managers, Regional Engineers, District Engineers, Control Operators, Communications Officers and a team from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
The platform is expected to strengthen communication and coordination among the various stakeholders while accelerating responses to power-related faults across the Ashanti Region.
On infrastructure development, Ing. Apau disclosed that ECG had completed the installation of 33kV panels to facilitate the reception of GRIDCo’s upgraded 145MVA transformer capacity at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP).
The upgrade is expected to enhance power supply capacity and contribute to efforts to address electricity challenges in the region.
The Energy Commission, however, requested details of intervention projects undertaken by ECG during the year, as well as at least five critical projects that could help resolve the power supply challenges in the short to medium term.
The requested projects are expected to provide further insight into the interventions required to improve electricity distribution and strengthen the reliability of power supply in the region.
The meeting was attended by the Acting Deputy Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission and his team, ECG Regional General Managers, Regional Engineers, Technical Managers and Communications Officers.
The engagement forms part of stakeholder efforts to assess the power situation in the Ashanti Region and identify practical measures to improve electricity supply.
Ashanti rregion has for several months been experiencing unstable power supply for both domestic and industrial use particularly during the peak period.
