Interior Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has urged leaders of parliamentary committees to strengthen their leadership, oversight and accountability responsibilities to promote effective parliamentary governance.
He said parliamentary committees play a critical role in scrutinising legislation, monitoring government policies, examining public expenditure and ensuring accountability in the management of public resources.
Mr. Muntaka made the remarks while speaking as a key speaker at the 2026 Parliamentary Committees Leadership Programme, organised by the Parliamentary Training Institute (PTI) in Accra.
The programme was held under the theme, “Enhancing Committee Leadership for Effective Parliamentary Governance.”
In a Facebook post, the Minister stressed the importance of continuous learning, adequate preparation, effective evidence gathering and evidence-based decision-making in strengthening the work of parliamentary committees.
He encouraged Members of Parliament to utilise budgetary and financial scrutiny, audit reports and monitoring visits as essential tools for effective oversight and ensuring value for money in public expenditure.
Mr. Muntaka also emphasised the need for integrity, fairness and cooperation across political divides, noting that committee recommendations must be properly monitored and implemented to achieve meaningful outcomes.
He further underscored the importance of diligent oversight and strong committee leadership in ensuring that Parliament effectively performs its constitutional responsibilities.
The Minister maintained that effective parliamentary governance requires a firm commitment to accountability and the public interest.
