Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has inaugurated a 17-member ministerial committee to spearhead efforts to revitalize the struggling Kumawood film industry.
The committee, which includes key industry stakeholders such as veteran actors Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu and Bill Asamoah, is tasked with developing a strategic framework to rejuvenate Kumawood and create sustainable job opportunities for industry players.
The committee will be chaired by Bishop Ofori-Adu.
The committee has been tasked with responsibility to
1. Assessing the current state of the industry and identifying key challenges.
Developing policies to attract investment and ensure sustainable growth.
2. Exploring strategies to promote Ghanaian films both locally and internationally.
3. Strengthening film infrastructure by improving production facilities and training opportunities.
4. Enhancing film festivals and cultural showcases to celebrate Ghanaian storytelling and creativity.
5. Fostering collaboration between stakeholders to create more opportunities for filmmakers, actors, and creatives.
During the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, March 4, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving the committee’s objectives.
“We, as leaders of the country, need you to work together in unity. That solidarity will encourage the president to put in more effort to revive the industry. Unity is crucial to this cause,” he stated.
Kumawood, once a thriving hub for Ghana’s local film industry, has faced significant challenges in recent years.
The newly formed committee is expected to develop actionable strategies to restore its vibrancy and ensure long-term growth.
