Incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) Upper West Regional Chairman Abdul Nasir Saani, popularly known as Chairman Bunas, has successfully completed vetting and picked ballot position three in his bid for a third consecutive term.
Mr Saani announced the development in a Facebook statement on Friday, October 16, 2026, describing the ballot number as symbolic of his third attempt to retain the regional chairmanship.
“This number signifies my third consecutive bid to lead our great party, the NDC, as Upper West Regional Chairman,” he said.
He is contesting the position against businessman Alhaji Alhassan Adams Randy and Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency Chairman Samba Sankaara, setting up a three-way contest for control of the party’s regional leadership.
Mr Saani said his decision to seek another term reflected his commitment to the NDC and his determination to consolidate the work undertaken during his tenure.
“This milestone reflects my unwavering commitment to our great party and my determination to continue and consolidate the good work we have started together,” he said.
He also appealed to delegates and party supporters to maintain their support as the internal election process progresses.
“As we enter this next phase, I look forward to working closely with each and every one of you to consolidate our gains, strengthen our party, and secure a resounding victory for the NDC in the Upper West Region and beyond,” he added.
2024 electoral record in focus
Mr Saani’s bid for another term comes against the backdrop of the NDC’s capture of all 11 parliamentary constituencies in the Upper West Region in the December 2024 general election.
The party had entered the election holding eight seats but won the remaining three constituencies previously held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), completing its “Operation 11-11” target.
The outcome has featured prominently in discussions about the regional party’s performance under his leadership. However, the electoral result also reflected the collective efforts of parliamentary candidates, constituency executives, campaign teams and grassroots supporters.
Mr Saani, who first won the regional chairmanship in 2018, secured a second term in November 2022 after defeating Mr Randy in their previous contest.
He polled 227 votes against Mr Randy’s 157 in that election, according to published results.

Mr Randy is now returning for another attempt at the position, while Mr Sankaara, who chairs the Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency, is seeking to lead the party at the regional level.
NDC prepares for regional elections
The vetting and balloting exercises form part of the NDC’s 2026 internal reorganisation, which will determine the party’s regional leadership ahead of the 2028 general election.
Mr Saani has expressed gratitude to delegates and party faithful for their prayers, encouragement and support, saying their confidence has helped sustain his leadership.
“Together, we shall break new ground, build on our achievements, and reach even greater heights,” he said.
The regional chairmanship contest will determine who leads the NDC’s structures in the Upper West Region as the party seeks to consolidate its parliamentary gains and prepare for the next general election.
