A pressure group calling itself Ghanaians for Progress (CHAPRO) has appealed for a review of Ghana’s constitutional presidential term limit to allow President John Dramani Mahama to contest the 2028 presidential election.
Addressing a press conference in Kumasi on Thursday, the group’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Appiah Daniel, said Ghana’s ongoing economic recovery and national development efforts require continuity in leadership beyond the two-term constitutional limit.
Dr. Appiah argued that President Mahama’s administration had, over the past one year and eight months, made significant strides in stabilising the economy, strengthening the cedi and restoring investor confidence.
According to him, the gains achieved under the current administration should not be interrupted by what he described as rigid constitutional restrictions.
“We believe the supreme law of the land exists to serve the welfare of the people. Where a leader has demonstrated exceptional capacity and commitment to national development, citizens have a moral responsibility to reconsider frameworks that may hinder continued progress,” he stated.
The group called on President Mahama to make himself available to seek what it described as a “fresh mandate” from Ghanaians in the 2028 general election.
Dr. Appiah also appealed to citizens, traditional authorities, workers, the youth and civil society organisations to support the campaign for constitutional reforms that would permit the President to seek another term in office.
CHAPRO maintained that the 1992 Constitution’s two-term limit for presidents should be challenged through legal and democratic processes, arguing that the provision no longer reflects the country’s current developmental needs.
The group urged Ghanaians to engage community leaders and elected representatives in discussions on the proposed constitutional amendment, insisting that continuity in leadership would help sustain ongoing economic and institutional reforms.
The press conference concluded with a call for national unity and support for the campaign before participants recited the Youth Anthem.
Ghana’s 1992 Constitution limits a president to serving a maximum of two four-year terms. Any amendment to provisions relating to presidential tenure would require constitutional processes as prescribed under the Constitution.
