Cocoa farmers await new price for 2026/2027 season

COCOBOD financing push precedes new cocoa producer price announcement

The government is expected to announce a new producer price for cocoa today, Friday, September 25, 2026, as preparations intensify for the 2026/2027 cocoa season.

The announcement is being closely watched by cocoa farmers, who are awaiting details of the price they will receive for their beans amid ongoing efforts to address financing and liquidity challenges within Ghana’s cocoa sector.

Ahead of the announcement, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has been engaging major international cocoa trading companies in London as part of efforts to secure financing for the new crop season.

The discussions have centred on the newly passed Ghana Cocoa Board Act, 2026, the proposed financing framework for the cocoa sector and measures to ensure the smooth commencement of the 2026/2027 season.

COCOBOD and the international trading companies also considered options for raising funds through commercial paper and bond financing, alongside liquidity arrangements to support cocoa purchasing operations.

The engagements further explored possible private-sector financing support for Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs), which play a key role in the purchase of cocoa beans from farmers.

Another issue discussed was Ghana’s preparedness to comply with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which has implications for access to the European cocoa market.

The financing discussions come against the backdrop of pressure on Ghana’s cocoa sector, with the government seeking to secure adequate resources to support cocoa purchases and other operations for the new season.

For the 2025/2026 light crop season, the government maintained the existing producer price despite a decline in international cocoa prices.

The price remained at GH¢1,241.76 per 30-kilogramme load for Grade I and II cocoa beans, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per 64-kilogramme gross bag.

The figure translated into GH¢41,392 per tonne, based on 16 bags.

The new producer price for the 2026/2027 season will determine the earnings of cocoa farmers and could also influence purchasing operations and the broader financial position of the cocoa sector.

Farmers, Licensed Buying Companies and other stakeholders are therefore expected to closely monitor today’s announcement for clarity on the price regime and the government’s broader financing arrangements for the new cocoa season.
