Patrick Kwame Atuah has officially thrown his hat in the ring to contest the Ashanti Regional Communications Officer position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), signalling a key succession move as the party reorganises ahead of the 2028 general election.
Atuah, widely regarded within party circles as an affable, efficient and intelligent communicator, says he is now “ready and convinced” to contest the regional communications role following the decision by the incumbent, Lawyer Abass Nurudeen, not to seek re-election.
Nurudeen, who currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Social Investment Fund (SIF), has indicated he will no longer hold the Ashanti Regional Communications post because the job requires physical presence in the region, not Accra.
“Now it is settled that the Ashanti Regional Communications Officer I’ll contest,” Atuah told Kojo Marfo on the Fakye Daybreak show.
“Our boss, Abass Nurudeen, when we came to office, by God’s grace got an appointment as CEO for the Social Investment Fund, so basically he’s no more in the region.”
He added: “With the communication job, you must be in the region; you can’t be in Accra and a communication officer in Ashanti region. So he has said he won’t contest again. He met us as communicators and said he won’t contest again.”
Positioning himself as a natural successor, Atuah expressed confidence that he cannot only match but improve on the work done under Nurudeen’s tenure.
“Some of us will step up and take up the mantle, and anyone that knows me over the years knows that if Abass is going and Atuah is stepping in, and you are a party person, you will sleep,” he said. “Every job he would have done, I can equally do and even better on his shortfalls, because he’s a human being.”
Atuah indicated that his campaign materials would soon begin circulating, telling Marfo: “Yes, I’ll come, and it’s confirmed that I’ll come very soon. You will see the flyers circulating.”
The announcement comes as the NDC undertakes internal restructuring across its regional apparatus, with new regional executives being installed to strengthen the party’s organisational base before the next general election.
While the opposition NPP has already elected new regional leadership in Ashanti, including a new regional communications officer, the NDC is similarly moving to refresh its regional team, with Atuah emerging as a leading contender for the communications brief.
With Nurudeen’s elevation to a national appointment and Atuah’s declaration, the Ashanti Regional NDC appears poised for a smooth transition in its communications leadership, a critical role as the party gears up for intensified political messaging in the region.
