Tension is reportedly mounting within the Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following a directive by the Regional Chairman, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as Chairman COKA, for the dissolution of youth group appointments made by the Regional Youth Organiser, Martin Ameyaw.
According to sources familiar with the development, Chairman COKA directed Mr Ameyaw to dissolve the appointments after expressing concerns over the manner in which the youth groups were constituted without prior notice to, or consultation with, his office.
The directive was reportedly communicated to the Regional Youth Organiser through WhatsApp, according to sources.
Following the directive, Mr Ameyaw is said to have communicated the dissolution of the appointments to members of the affected youth groups, while explaining the circumstances that led to the decision.
The development has reportedly generated tension among some members of the party’s youth wing in the region, with differing views emerging over the authority of regional executives to constitute committees and appoint individuals to assist in their work.
Some party members are said to support the Regional Chairman’s position, arguing that elected regional executives must operate within established party structures and consult appropriately to promote cohesion, discipline and unity.
Others, however, believe elected executives should be given sufficient latitude to select individuals they consider capable of serving on their respective committees and helping them achieve their mandates.
The disagreement has consequently raised questions about the balance between the authority of elected regional executives and the need for consultation within the party’s organisational structure.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no publicly available statement from either Chairman COKA or Mr Ameyaw providing further details on the directive and the affected appointments.
