Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie: Physician, Legislator and health-policy advocate
Share on WhatsApp

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie is a Ghanaian medical doctor, healthcare entrepreneur and politician whose career reflects a commitment to improving healthcare delivery and influencing national health policy.

He represents the Effiduase-Asokore Constituency in the Ashanti Region as a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Through his work in medicine, hospital management and Parliament, he has sought to bridge the gap between clinical practice and public policymaking.

Educational Background and Medical Career

Dr. Ayew Afriyie holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) from the University of Ghana Medical School.

He furthered his education with a Master of Arts in Economic Policy Management and a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Economics from the University of Leeds, as well as a certificate from Oxford.

His multidisciplinary educational background has informed his approach to healthcare, particularly the relationship between patient care, health financing, resource allocation and the sustainability of healthcare institutions.

Professionally, he has served as a medical officer and as Head of Institutional Public Health at Ridge Hospital.

He has also worked at the Castle Clinic, gaining experience in clinical practice and public health administration. Beyond his work in established medical institutions, he founded and serves as Chief Executive Officer of St. John’s Hospital and Fertility Centre, an enterprise that has given him practical experience in healthcare delivery and hospital management.

Parliamentary Career and Health-Policy Leadership

Dr. Ayew Afriyie has established a strong presence in Ghana’s Parliament through his focus on health-related legislation, policy discussions and healthcare reform.

He served as Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Health during the Seventh and Eighth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic, providing leadership on issues affecting the country’s health sector.

He has also served on the Finance Committee and subsequently as Ranking Member of the Health Committee.

His parliamentary work has centred on improving healthcare access, strengthening health institutions and addressing challenges associated with the delivery of medical services.

Drawing on his professional background, he has advocated public-private partnerships as a means of easing congestion in regional healthcare facilities and expanding the capacity of existing institutions.

Within the NPP, Dr. Ayew Afriyie has also participated in discussions on party organisation and institutional reform, including defending proposed constitutional amendments relating to party leadership structures.

His political engagement reflects an interest in both health-sector development and the broader governance of public institutions.

Notable Achievements and Public Engagement

One of the recurring features of Dr. Ayew Afriyie’s public service has been his involvement in community development and health education. In 2019, members and sympathisers of the NPP in the Sekyere East area publicly commended his leadership and efforts to promote development across the constituency, according to a Ghana News Agency report.

In 2020, the Bono East Regional Youth Wing of the NPP presented him with a citation of honour in recognition of his commitment to youth empowerment and party development.

His contribution to public health education was also evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. As Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, he participated in efforts to educate the public about vaccination and counter misinformation, including in rural communities where false claims posed challenges to public health communication.

In June 2025, he attracted further public attention through his involvement as Ranking Member of the Health Committee in engagements surrounding the nationwide nurses’ strike. These discussions highlighted the importance of dialogue among government, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders in addressing labour concerns and maintaining essential health services.

A Commitment to Healthcare Development

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie’s career brings together three areas of professional engagement: medicine, healthcare entrepreneurship and parliamentary leadership. His experience in clinical practice has provided insight into the challenges facing patients and healthcare workers, while his involvement in hospital management has exposed him to the financial and operational demands of delivering medical services.

In Parliament, he has applied this experience to debates on healthcare policy, institutional capacity, public health education and health-sector reform. His work illustrates the role that professionals with direct industry experience can play in shaping public policy and contributing to national development.

As a physician, hospital founder and legislator, Dr. Ayew Afriyie has built his public profile around healthcare delivery and policy advocacy. His career continues to reflect the intersection of medical expertise, political leadership and the pursuit of a stronger healthcare system for Ghana.
