Ghana is set to host a pivotal gathering of African leaders, policymakers, and global health stakeholders at the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit on August 5, 2025 in Accra.
The event, convened under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, aims to chart a new course for global health governance, placing African health sovereignty at the center of the global agenda.
Themed “The Accra Initiative: African Health Sovereignty in a Reimagined Global Health Governance Architecture”, the summit will respond to growing concerns over outdated global health systems, shifting geopolitics, declining donor support, and emerging health threats.
According to organizers, the event will serve as a platform to call for urgent reforms and promote national ownership and sustainable investment in Africa’s health systems.
In a statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the summit is described as “a moment for Africa to lead not only in financing its own health systems, but also in reshaping the rules that govern global health.”
President Mahama emphasized the need for coordinated African leadership, citing his experience during the 2014 Ebola outbreak as evidence of the continent’s capacity to respond effectively when united.
The summit also builds on efforts by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and African Union institutions to improve continental health financing and collaboration.
Key Deliverables
The summit will adopt The Accra Initiative, a bold outcome document that outlines principles, benchmarks, and a roadmap for global health governance reform.
Key commitments expected from the summit include:
- The establishment of a Presidential High-Level Panel to design a new global health governance framework aligned with national priorities.
- The launch of the SUSTAIN Initiative, aimed at building country-led, investment-driven health systems supported by domestic resources, private sector involvement, and international partnerships.
- Formal endorsement of the Accra Compact, which outlines Africa’s unified vision for health sovereignty and a fairer global health order.
- Commitment to principles such as inclusivity, accountability, resilience, and sustainable funding.
Despite notable global health achievements in recent decades such as reductions in child and maternal mortality and gains in HIV/AIDS control the summit organizers stress that these improvements are increasingly under threat due to global instability and systemic weaknesses.
“Africa must take charge of its health destiny not in isolation, but through determined, coordinated action,” President Mahama declared ahead of the summit.
The Africa Health Sovereignty Summit is expected to set the tone for a transformative shift in global health, placing African priorities, leadership, and voices at the forefront of international health policy and reform.
