The Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribe Issifu, has led a high-level security delegation, including the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to Gindabour following the deaths of a teacher and a police officer in separate but linked incidents.

The visit on Friday, September 18, followed a closed-door security meeting involving the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), the District Security Council and senior police officers at the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly.

The delegation went to Gindabour to obtain first-hand information on the unrest and engage local stakeholders as authorities work to restore calm.

The community has been tense since Wednesday, September 16, when a primary school teacher, Abu Seidu, died after an encounter with police officers on patrol along the Gindabour-Kenkyen road.

According to the police account, a motorbike rider who saw the patrol vehicle diverted into the bush. Officers followed and found him unconscious before picking him up to take him to hospital. He died while being transported.

News of the death triggered anger in the community and was followed by a mob attack on the police team, resulting in the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu and injuries to other officers. The police vehicle was also damaged. Both bodies were subsequently deposited at the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The violence has since led to arrests and heightened security in the area.

The latest court proceedings on Saturday saw 44 accused persons remanded into police custody in connection with the alleged killing of Constable Owusu. They are facing charges of conspiracy and murder and are expected to reappear before the Buipe Magistrate Court on October 12, 2026.

The development has also triggered allegations of property vandalism.

The Sawla Youth Network has accused security personnel deployed to the area of destroying homes, vehicles and other private properties following the killing of the police officer. The group is demanding an independent inquiry into the two deaths, the alleged destruction of property and compensation for affected residents.

Addressing the security delegation, Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awuribe assured the police and other investigative bodies of the Regional Coordinating Council’s support for a thorough, impartial and professional investigation.

He said anyone found culpable would have to face the appropriate legal processes.

The Minister also cautioned residents against mob justice, reprisal attacks and any further violence.

He urged security personnel deployed to Gindabour to exercise restraint, professionalism and respect for the law while carrying out their duties.

The Regional Security Council has meanwhile reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and restoring peace in Gindabour.

The visit comes as authorities seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the two deaths and prevent the situation from escalating further.
