The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development has announced the commencement of a field verification exercise following the receipt of petitions from various stakeholders requesting the creation and elevation of certain Municipal and District Assemblies (M/DAs).
The petitions, submitted by chiefs, traditional authorities, members of Parliament, opinion leaders, and citizens, call for changes to the current structure of local governance in several areas.
To facilitate this process, the Ministry has constituted an Inter-Institutional Task Team responsible for conducting on-site assessments of the petitions. The task team will evaluate the merits of the requests and make appropriate recommendations to the Minister.
In a communication addressed to the affected M/DAs, the Ministry indicated that the field verification exercise is scheduled to take place from Sunday, 15th September to Friday, 20th September 2024. Specific dates for the visits to individual districts are outlined in the attached itinerary sent to the M/DAs.
Municipal and District Assemblies involved in this process have been urged to ensure their preparedness for the task team’s visits. The Ministry has requested full cooperation from the assemblies, including the provision of all necessary documents, maps, and photographs to support the verification exercise. This cooperation is essential for the successful completion of what is described as a critical national assignment.
For any further clarifications, the Ministry has directed inquiries to Ms. Miriam Nana Ama Amoah, head of the Decentralization Unit.
The outcome of the verification exercise will play a significant role in determining whether the petitions will be approved, leading to the creation or elevation of the affected districts. This initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to enhance local governance and bring development closer to the people.
