A pressure group, National Grassroots for Bawumia, has appealed to former running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to refrain from making further public statements, citing concerns that his remarks are negatively impacting Dr. Bawumia’s presidential campaign.
The group said with less than 72 hours remaining before the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, Dr. Opoku Prempeh should step back from campaign activities to avoid undermining the efforts already invested by Dr. Bawumia and his campaign team.
The appeal follows comments described by the group as a “bombshell” made by Dr. Opoku Prempeh on Tuesday during an interaction with delegates in the Bantama Constituency. At the event, he reportedly stated that in his nearly seven years of service under the NPP government, he had not encountered anyone more sensible at Cabinet meetings than former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The remark has triggered backlash on social media, with some commentators interpreting it as an indirect criticism of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who chaired Cabinet meetings during his administration. Critics argue that the statement appeared to diminish the former President’s role and leadership.
Speaking on behalf of the group, its National Coordinator, Fred Appiah, said the comments had generated unnecessary controversy at a crucial stage of the campaign.
“We are appealing to Dr. Napo that if Dr. Bawumia has done anything wrong against him, he should forgive him and stay away from campaign platforms, because his utterances are hurting us too much,” he said.
The group expressed concern that the goodwill and momentum built by Dr. Bawumia and his campaign team over the past year risk being eroded by what it described as avoidable public pronouncements by Dr. Opoku Prempeh.
They emphasized the need for unity and restraint as the party approaches the primaries, warning that internal distractions could undermine the NPP’s chances going forward.
