When Hon. Lawyer Bede Ziedeng walks through the dusty school compounds of Lawra, children run to greet him with smiles and waves. To them, he is more than their Member of Parliament. He is a mentor, a bridge of hope, and a man whose commitment to education is changing lives in visible and lasting ways.
Since assuming office in 2021, Hon. Bede Ziedeng has invested an estimated Ghc 1,175,703.45 directly into the education sector of the Lawra Constituency. His interventions touch every level of learning, from basic schools to tertiary institutions, and reflect a clear understanding that education is the surest path to empowerment.
“Education is the foundation of human progress,” Hon. Bede often says. “When we invest in our children’s learning, we are investing in the future of Lawra itself.”
Touching Lives, One Student at a Time
For hundreds of students across Lawra, Bede Ziedeng’s support has meant the difference between dropping out and graduating. Since 2021, he has supported 400 tertiary students with Ghc1,000 each, amounting to Ghc400,000, and from June 2025 onward, he doubled his support to Ghc2,000 per student for another 60 students.
One of the beneficiaries, a final-year university student, shared, “When I received the support from the MP, I was able to pay my hostel fees and register for my exams. Without that help, I might have deferred my studies.”
These individual stories tell of a leader who understands that progress is not built in grand speeches but in quiet, consistent acts of support.
Strengthening the Roots of Basic Education
Hon. Bede Ziedeng’s impact goes far beyond tertiary scholarships. He has made sure that the foundational level of education receives the same attention. From providing mathematical sets worth over Ghc126,720 to feeding BECE and WASSCE candidates across various schools, his actions have eased the burdens of families and given students confidence to perform better in examinations.
“Sometimes, the smallest help can make the biggest difference,” he noted during a visit to Brifoh SHS after sponsoring their 2025 BECE Mock Exams. “When a student sits in the exam hall knowing someone believes in them, that is empowerment.”
Over the years, he has also sponsored mock examinations, feeding programs, and counselling sessions for candidates preparing for national exams, helping hundreds of pupils approach learning with dignity and purpose.
Investing in Infrastructure and Dignity
Beyond scholarships and feeding programs, Hon. Bede Ziedeng has taken a practical approach to restoring dignity to learning environments. He has rehabilitated several schools affected by storms, including the Lawra–Berwong M/A Primary School, Eremon–Naburnye Primary, and Brifoh–Gombile Basic School, at a total cost exceeding Ghc81,000.
He has also provided modern teaching logistics such as laptops, projectors, furniture, and public address systems, and supported the Ghana Education Service (GES) Directorate in Lawra with funds for supervision, logistics, and inter-district activities.
In his words, “Our teachers and administrators need to feel supported if we expect quality education. Infrastructure and logistics are not luxuries—they are necessities.”
Compassion in Times of Crisis
In moments of tragedy, Hon. Bede Ziedeng’s compassion has shone through. When Brifoh SHS and Eremon SHS lost their girls’ dormitories to fire, he personally donated relief items valued at over Ghc86,000 to support the affected students.
He later remarked, “No child should lose hope because of circumstances beyond their control. My duty as their representative is to stand with them in good times and in difficult times.”
A Vision Rooted in Human Capital Development
Hon. Bede Ziedeng’s approach to education reflects a deeper philosophy. His initiatives align with the human capital theory articulated by economist Gary Becker (1960), which emphasizes education as a driver of social and economic transformation. He often reminds his team that “an educated society is a developed society.”
This conviction inspired him to establish the Lawra Education Support Fund, an institutional mechanism designed to sustain scholarships and support programs for years to come.
A Lasting Legacy
From scholarships to school rehabilitation, from supporting teachers to feeding candidates, Hon. Lawyer Bede Ziedeng’s impact on education is not merely counted in Ghana cedis. It is measured in changed lives, restored hope, and a renewed belief among the people of Lawra that education can transform their community.
As Naako Saakom, Head of Research for the National Democratic Congress in the Lawra Constituency, aptly summarized, “Hon. Bede Ziedeng’s leadership in education is human-centered and visionary. He is not only shaping young minds but shaping the destiny of Lawra itself.”
