The newly elected Ashanti Regional Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Keskin Owusu Poku, has pledged to strengthen the party’s communication machinery and make the NPP more popular across the Ashanti Region ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Dr. Owusu Poku acknowledged the contribution of the immediate past Regional Communication Director, Paul Kwabena Nyando, saying he would build on his predecessor’s achievements to advance the interests of the party.
“Paul Kwabena Nyando did his best for the party in the region. I will build on what he did for the progress of the party,” he said.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Ultimate FM in an interview monitored by Kumasi Mail, Dr. Owusu Poku said the party would critically examine the communication strategies employed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), particularly its approach to agenda-setting in the region.
He said the NPP’s performance in the media space during the 2026 elections exposed the need for the party to review its communication strategy, particularly in the Ashanti Region, which has traditionally been considered a stronghold of the party.
“We lost the media in the 2026 election in the Ashanti Region, which is our stronghold. We have to study the NDC’s agenda-setting style in the region. We will also focus on training in political communication,” he said.
He added that his primary responsibility was to coordinate the party’s communication activities in the region and ensure that the communication directorate effectively served the party.
“My mandate is to manage communication in the region; therefore, I will make sure I deliver for the party,” Dr. Owusu Poku stated.
Why he supported Odeneho Kwaku Appiah
Dr. Owusu Poku also explained his decision to openly support and campaign for the newly elected Ashanti Regional Chairman, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah.
According to him, his support was based largely on Mr. Appiah’s communication skills, commitment to the party and leadership style.
“I love his communication skills and commitment to the party. I supported him in the 2020 elections, but he lost. He talks less but takes more action,” he said.
Dr. Owusu Poku further expressed confidence that the new chairman would respect the party’s structures and allow the various organs to perform their respective roles.
“He is not the chairman who will take over communication activities. He will play a crucial role; however, he will allow the party structures to work. This is the vision he holds, and I have believed in his political ideas from day one,” he said.
Regional executives urged to work together
Meanwhile, the newly elected Ashanti Regional Chairman has begun engaging key party figures as part of efforts to promote unity and strengthen the NPP ahead of the 2028 elections.
On Sunday, the chairman met the Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, at his residence and assured him of an important role in the party’s activities in the Ashanti Region as preparations for the 2028 elections gather momentum.
Dr. Owusu Poku said the new regional executive committee would ensure that every elected member was given the opportunity to effectively perform their assigned responsibilities.
He called on all NPP members in the Ashanti Region to rally behind the newly elected regional executives and support their efforts to rebuild and strengthen the party before, during and after the 2028 general elections.
He said the collective goal was to restore public confidence in the NPP in the region and position the party to achieve its ultimate objective of winning the 2028 elections.
