Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has officially declared his intention to contest in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primaries when nominations are opened.
The former Assin Central Member of Parliament, made the announcement during a press conference in Kumasi, where he also disclosed his decision to withdraw from the party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour.
“I have pulled out from the Thank You Tour. I can’t guarantee the safety of my supporters from further violence attack ,” he said.
He stated that he has to step aside and allow the party’s 2024 Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to continue with his activities, emphasizing that he would not be intimidated but was prioritizing peace within the party.
Kennedy Agyapong condemned a violent incident that occurred during the tour at Bantama, where a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), known to be one of his supporters, was allegedly stabbed amid gunfire .
He accused individuals aligned with Dr. Bawumia’s camp, particularly a known loyalist, Ali Suraj, of orchestrating the attack. “Why should my supporter be stabbed by heavily built men brought by Ali Suraj?” he questioned.
The NPP’s 2028 Presidential candidate hopeful Ken Agyapong revealed that he had informed both Dr. Bawumia and the NPP General Secretary about his decision to withdraw from the tour, and said they agreed with his choice.
Calling for justice for the injured student, he said, “We have videos of the group that attacked the boy. I will pursue this case to its logical conclusion. At the moment, my focus is on ensuring the victim receives proper healthcare and recovers quickly to continue his education.”
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to contest the party’s presidential primaries. “I am going to regroup my team and start our campaign soon. I hope no one will try to stop me when we begin.”
