A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Kwasi Kwarteng, has said that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is the person who can win the 2028 election for the party.
He made this statement during a panel discussion on GHOne TV’s GHToday programme monitored by Kumasimail.com
Kwarteng, known for his frank opinions, explained that all potential candidates are currently rebranding themselves ahead of the next party primaries.
He hinted that the NPP may soon expand its delegate list, which currently stands at about 230,000 polling station executives, to possibly as many as 700,000—tripling the number of voices who will decide the party’s flagbearer.
Kwarteng said, “Dr. Bawumia will contest, as we can see from his public statements and actions. But the NPP is a party of democracy and rule of law. The delegates, who may soon number up to 700,000, will decide who leads the party. Everyone is working to show their best side.”
“I am sure everybody will rebrand themselves whether it’s Kennedy Agyapong, Bawumia, my former boss (and still my boss) Dr. Adutwum, or Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who I am aware will also contest. At the end of the day, the people will decide, so yes, the party needs to rebrand”, he added.
When asked why he backs Kennedy Agyapong over his former boss, Dr. Adutwum, Kwarteng was clear “my former boss yes I believe in him, i believe he’s capable of leading the NPP just like all the other candidates but within the exigencies of the moment, the present time I am of the view that if the caveat has more to do with who can win as power in 2028 I am of the view that Ken has another advantage to getting us 2028 maybe subsequently all the other candidates may come in.”
When pressed on what he would do if his preferred candidate does not win, Kwarteng emphasized the importance of party unity.
“If Kennedy doesn’t win, we have no choice but to support whoever does. That’s how our party works. Many people didn’t support Dr. Bawumia at first, but after he won, even Kennedy Agyapong supported him. We will all rally behind the winner.”
